100th Anniversary of Death Valley Heat Record

It was 100 years ago today that the hottest ever temperature recorded-- 134 degrees, was set in Death Valley. A heat wave in Southern California brought temps up to 128 degrees in Death Valley just a few days ago (the photo shows people walking on a salt flat at Badwater Basin). One reason this location experiences such intense heat is because of its very low elevation-- parts are below sea level, even though it's 250 miles away from any major body of water. More here.
