Mayan communities in southern Mexico have begun a year-long countdown to Dec. 21, 2012, the end date for one of their ancient calendar cycles. Meanwhile, Mexico's tourism agency, which doesn't actually believe the world will end on the 12/21 date, is hoping for increased visitors to the region, and more than 500 Mayan-themed events are planned throughout the year.
