The moving rocks of Death Valley have puzzled researchers for decades. The rocks, some weighing as much as 700 pounds, leave mysterious trails hundreds of yards long in the dry desert lake bed. Paula Messina, assistant professor of geology at San Jose State University in California, believes that extremely strong winds push these rocks across the surface of the playa after it has been made slick with rain.
