(1)Scientists have unraveled the mystery behind one of nature's most dazzling displays -- the northern lights. Using data gathered from five satellites called THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions), researchers believe these auroral flare-ups are triggered by a process called magnetic reconnection, in which stressed magnetic field lines suddenly snap to a new shape, like a rubber band that's been stretched too far.
