'Purple Earth' Hypothesis
While today's Earth is dominated by the color green from plants, an earlier stage of the planet had a purple cast to it, a researcher has theorized. Primitive microbes that used retinal to harness the sun's energy, instead of chlorophyll, would have had a violet hue. For more on the study, visit LiveScience(1).
