Solar Storm Sets Skies Aglow

Solar Storm Sets Skies Aglow

Astrophotographer Laurent Silvani captured this breathtaking image of the northern lights shining brightly above Quebec's Saguenay region on Saturday. The aurora, which could be seen as far south as Colorado, was sparked by a light solar storm ejected from an active spot on the sun known as Region 1748—the same area that blasted out four powerful X-class flares this week. According to forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center, major storms can be expected as Region 1748 turns this direction.
