Despite fears that inclement weather would scrap today's lift off, the space shuttle Atlantis successfully launched into orbit, beginning the final mission of NASA's 30 year shuttle program. The event drew a crowd of nearly one million spectators, who crowded around Florida's Cape Canaveral to witness the historic close of this chapter in America's space exploration.
