Saul and the Witch of Endor

As a sneak peek into the spooky October issue of After Dark, we present excerpts from Maureen Hennessy's look at the nefarious creature known as the chupacabra:…There have been many sightings in Michigan, including the report of a 42-year-old man who said he saw the creature suck the blood of a cat. There were many reports in 1997 in Brazil, including one from a police officer. Closer to home, there has been a rash of chupacabra sightings in Washington DC, and Philadelphia. From March 2005 through May 2006, the chupacabra was spotted in Russia. The reports described a creature that killed and sucked blood from turkeys and sheep. Phantom Clown Menace

In the early 1980's, a wave of evil clown reports spread across America. Dubbed "Phantom Clowns" by researcher Loren Coleman, sightings of these dark harlequins have reemerged in the Chicago area over the past few weeks. More on the story at The Copycat Effect.

New Lunar Rover

NASA's new lunar rover (pictured) is being tested this weekend in the Arizona desert. Unlike previous moon buggies, this prototype vehicle features a pressurized cabin that will allow astronauts to work on the lunar surface for days without the use of a spacesuit. Joseph Jacobs Predictions

First hour guest, psychic Joseph Jacobs shared some predictions for 2009, which he called a year of fusion and fission. Turkey UFO Footage

Video of a "flying saucer" recorded in Turkey in June, 2008 has been declared to be genuine by the Sirius UFO Space Science Research Centre in Turkey reports The Sun. View the video, still images, and more info here.

Daredevil Sets Record

Nik Wallenda pedaled his way to a new world record Wednesday by riding a bicycle across a 235-foot wire suspended from two cranes some 135 feet above the streets of Newark. Onlookers were stunned when the daredevil's bike started to slide backward on the upward slope of the cable a few yards shy of his goal. After finishing Wallenda revealed he would attempt to walk across the Grand Canyon next spring. More details at MSNBC including the TODAY Show video.

Girl Braves Snail Trail

Tiana Walton set an unusual world record for having the most snails on her face. The nine-year-old schoolgirl was able to get 25 of the slimy creatures to stick to her face in the one minute time limit. About her experience Walton said: "I am not squeamish. It is relaxing but it feels a bit cold. They are quite smelly and you can see their big long eyes." More at Ananova.

The Ghost Aquatic?

A visitor to an English aquarium was stunned when she returned home and noticed an eerie visage in one of her pictures. The photo, which appears to show a disembodied head inside the shark tank exhibit, has baffled aquarium officials. You can see a larger version of the image here.

The Hottest Planet

Toiling through a lengthy period of drought, California farmers are turning to a classic esoteric solution: dowsing. Also known as "water witches," dowsers have seen demand for their services grow as word of their uncanny abilities spreads. More from the New York Times.

Meet the Muntjac

Last seen in 1930 and thought to be extinct, a unique species of deer, known as the Muntjac, has been rediscovered on the island of Sumatra. The find adds another layer of intrigue to an area of the world long thought to be the home of a variety of mysterious beasts. More at Cryptomundo.

Full Body Apparition?

Paranormal investigator Kristen Sheley captured this photo that appears to show a shadowy figure standing at the end of the hallway. According to Sheley and her associates, there was no one at the end of the hallway, and a photo taken just seconds later shows no apparition. Full report and additional photos at Alien Seeker News.

Willow Hotel Haunting

Some believe evil spirits haunt the halls of the Willow Hotel in Jamestown, California. The building, which has mysteriously caught fire and nearly burned to the ground numerous times, sits over the site of an abandoned mineshaft. Allison Etchison, a waitress at the hotel's restaurant, believes the ghosts of miners are trying to communicate by tapping on metal pipes in the building. According to a former guest, the 'Tommyknockers' are attempting to warn people in the hotel about a malevolent presence—a devilish spirit that terrorized her in the hotel's restroom. Window Pain

After drawing thousands of onlookers last week, a window, believed by some to contain an image of the Virgin Mary, will soon be removed from the hospital where it was discovered. Hoping to avoid further disruptions at the building, hospital officials plan to have the window studied, provided that the image is not disturbed during the removal process. More on the story here.

Monkey at Work

At a restaurant in Japan, patrons who order sake or a hot towel may find themselves being served by an unlikely waiter: Yatchan, the owner's pet macaque monkey. More on the story here, including video of Yatchan in action.

Repliee, the Robot Girl

The amazingly life-like robot 'Repliee R-1' is based on the appearance of a real five-year-old Japanese girl. Check out The Sun for a video clip and further details.

Small Asteroid Over Sudan

A small space rock on a collision course with Earth, burned up in the atmosphere over Sudan earlier tonight. About the size of a car, there have been no reports of damage from the object.Astronomers were excited because it's the first time such an impact has been predicted with near certainty. More at KTVU.com. Dr. Sky and Dan Durda commented on the event at the start of the show.

Restructuring Water

In a collaborative experiment, David Sereda exposed water to the actual sound of the sun, as recorded by NASA. The photo shows the resultant water crystal. To view larger, along with further details, click here.

Bear Visits Hospital

A California black bear wandered through the main entrance of a hospital in South Lake Tahoe this past week. Barton Memorial's surveillance cameras caught the bear's antics on video. See the footage at cbs13.com.

Fossett Discovery

The discovery of some of Steve Fossett's personal belongings and plane wreckage near Mammoth Lakes was announced this week. Pictured (click on image for larger) is a map with location "B" being the general area where Fossett's items were found, and the location of the plane wreckage "A" cited by Ed Dames during his July 10, 2008 C2C appearance. Based on the map legend, the locations are around 40-50 miles apart. Ed Dames appeared briefly at the start of the show, commenting that the objects found on the ground may not be relevant to the crash site. He also sent us a video clip regarding his search efforts.

Solar Silence

The fewest number of sunspots in decades and the reduction of the solar wind has surprised scientists, who were expecting more activity during this part of the solar cycle. There is uncertainty as to what the prolonged effects might be-- it could lead to a cooler Earth, say some climatologists. More at the Financial Times.

Spacecraft's Death Plunge

'Jules Verne,' Europe's unmanned spacecraft, reentered Earth's atmosphere on Sept. 29th, breaking up into dozens of fragments which fell into the Pacific Ocean in a pre-selected path.The spectacular disintegration was photographed by NASA. Click here to view a larger photo and further details.
