'Saintly' Figure?

Twin brothers Phil and Mick Cahalane say this photo (pictured) shows their great-grandfather with the ghostly image of St. Teresa of Avila. According to family stories, the "saintly" figure appeared in a photo he took after surviving a terrible storm during a fishing trip. "He started praying because he thought he was going to die. The storm passed and because he thought it was safe, he kept fishing, and that's when he caught most of his fish," Phil Cahalane said. More info and larger photo available from Mt Druitt Standard.

Eruption Imminent?

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey say Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano could erupt within days to weeks -- perhaps even hours. The threat level has been raised to orange (the stage just before eruption) due to changes in gas emissions and increased earthquake activity. The Alaska Volcano Observatory is reporting: "Seismic unrest continues at Redoubt and activity is well above normal background levels." Mount Redoubt last erupted nearly 20 years ago, in December 1989 (pictured). Read more at FOXNews.com.

'Hobbits' Not Human

An analysis of the 18,000-year-old "hobbit" skull found on the Indonesian island of Flores in 2003 (pictured left, next to a human skull) shows that the tiny creatures were an entirely separate species from modern humans. Some scientists previously thought the fossil may have belonged to an ancient human with a genetic disease. A new study led by Dr. Karen Baab, a biological anthropologist at Stony Brook University, suggests this theory is incorrect. Get more details at findingDulcinea.

Teleportation Milestone

Researchers at the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland have succeeded in teleporting quantum information between two charged atoms more than three feet apart. According to the Jan. 23 issue of the journal Science, the quantum information is instantly teleported from one ion to another, and can be recovered about 90 percent of the time. Though a way off from Star Trek type teleportation (pictured), this breakthrough could pave the way for the development of quantum computers. Read more at LiveScience.
