A Fumbled Fortune

Last weekend (7/9/05) I was hanging with a bunch of friends, we ordered some Chinese and just hung out all nite eating and talking. After dinner we all cracked open our Fortune Cookies to read our fortunes. Well as we went around in a circle to read each of ours it finally got around to me. I had the most insane "fortune" I've ever seen, and reading it aloud to the group had everyone looking at me like I was crazy, but I was just reading what was written. Being the "wacky one" of the group people laughed and figured who else would end up with something like this!?

" Ssoorrrryy,, dduupplleexx sswwiittcchh oonn "

What language is that!?!? What the heck does it mean!?! By the way, on top of that, the fortune "cookie" itself was stale, man did I get robbed that nite!!!

Update from Steve C:
Been getting tons of responses about the posting about my fumbled fortune cookie...Everyone who's written has been very kind, informative and have said they've gotten a good laugh out of it. Thanks again...Mystery Solved!!!

A "Duplex Switch" was a button on old typewriters which produced double letters. ("aa","BB") It is most likely useful for words such as "wood" "seed" ect. I know becuase I have an old Underwood, and it has the switch "Duplex", although it is very difficult to use!

That is from the old days using terminal software to call BBS's with a modem. If the other end was using Full Duplex and you had it set on, you'd get double characters echoing on your screen... LLiikkee tthhiiss. That's all it means.

Referring to the article on Coast to Coast, Duplex switch is on is a technical term (computer) to say that the Duplex mode is tuned on. There are 2 type of duplex mode or modulation: Half duplex and full duplex. It is a communication protocol. You can find more information here: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/full_duplex.html
