Psychologist and mystic scientist Christopher Holmes(1) spoke about the spiritual nature of human beings and the connection of consciousness with the heart. Consciousness is distributed throughout the body and does not just reside in the brain, he noted. Contrary to the "new age" dictum that your thoughts create your own reality, Holmes said there is a much deeper level associated with the heart, and beyond the physical, the heart has a higher dimensional level to it.
But the vast majority of people are not "fully awakened in the heart," and live in a perpetual state of "sleepwalking" or false consciousness, he commented. Those who are awakened in this area are loving, constant, not attached to materialism, and exhibit few negative emotions, he added.
We exist in a series of interpenetrating bodies, that include the physical, astral, and mental planes, and each living being has an essence that emerges from a "zero point" center, he stated. The term "zero point," Holmes explained, comes from the esoteric teachings of Madame Blavatsky and refers to a divine source emanation that is at the root of our consciousness.
