Host:

George Noory

Guests:

Peter Lance

Appearing during the first three hours, investigative reporter Peter Lance presented a look at current threats from al Qaeda and the Taliban and just how far the FBI and other intelligence agencies have come in protecting America seven and a half years since 9-11. The answer, said Lance, is not far enough. The FBI, he believes, is incompetent in handling ongoing threats. The NY FBI, in particular, began to compartmentalize to cover-up their failures, and if they'd applied the techniques they successfully used on the Mob toward al Qaeda, the Towers might still be standing, he declared.

Recently, the office for the Director of National Intelligence was criticized in a report for financial mismanagement, turf battles, and the same kind of intelligence failures which led to 9/11, he cited.

Lance also reviewed material from his book Cover Up, about the how the US government has not been open about its counterterrorism failures since the mid-1990s, in instances such as terrorist Ramzi Yousef ordering the bombing of TWA 800 from his prison cell. He also detailed his investigation into the life of Ali Mohamed, bin Laden's master spy who infiltrated the CIA. For more, check out this terrorism timeline (PDF file) featured in his book Triple Cross.

The last hour of the show featured Open Lines.

    'Tree' in Patient's Lung

A five-centimeter fir tree was found in the lung of a man in Central Russia last week. Doctors conducting a biopsy (as they thought he had a tumor) were surprised to see green needles in the cut. It's speculated that the patient might have inhaled a small bud, which then started to grow in his body. More here.
