Pluto & Beyond/ Tarot & Witchcraft

About the show

Planetary scientist Alan Stern with the New Horizons mission, and astrobiologist David Grinspoon discussed the story of the NASA spacecraft, New Horizons, sent to explore the mysterious icy worlds of Pluto and beyond. Small moons and dwarf planets like Pluto can be much more active in ways than scientists ever considered, noted Grinspoon, adding that New Horizons is still functioning almost a billion miles past Pluto. It's exploring the Kuiper Belt in our outer solar system, and will make a flyby past a small object nicknamed Ultima Thule, which means "beyond the furthest frontier."

Stern declared the New Horizons mission to be a success after its exploration of Pluto in July 2015, which revealed a tremendous diversity of phenomena. "We see massive glaciers the size of the state of Texas made of nitrogen ice," he said of Pluto, and "evidence for avalanches...giant ice volcanoes the scale of Mauna Loa. We have evidence for a liquid water ocean inside the planet, for snows from the atmosphere." The size of the New Horizons craft is actually quite small, Stern noted-- about that of a baby grand piano, weighing around 1,000 lbs. The two guests also commented on the announcement that ancient organic matter has been found on Mars-- this kind of matter has already been detected in the middle and outer solar system, such as on Saturn's giant moon Titan.

Professional Tarot reader/scholar and rootworker, Madame Pamita operates an old-time spiritualist's shop in Los Angeles. In the latter half, she spoke about how she employs various methods to work with clients including witchcraft, divination, channeling, and Tarot. She finds the Tarot to be an efficient tool for client readings. Working with the Rider-Waite deck, she noted that contrary to the stereotype, the Death card often has positive connotations, referring to change or transformation in a person's life.

She utilizes spell kits and candle magic, in which a person focuses their energy on a certain outcome. After you set your intention, you let the candle do the work for you, sending out its beacon of light as it burns, she explained. Working with the Ouija board or spirit communications, she advises putting up a "gate," so that only entities of the highest vibration can come through. Madame Pamita is also singer/musician and recorded an album on wax cylinders, a technology from the 1870s (view YouTube clip).

During the last half-hour, George played a clip from one of Art Bell's interviews with Al Bielek talking about the Philadelphia experiment.

News segment guests: John Curtis, Mike Bara, Peter Davenport
