In the August issue of After Dark, Paul Toth looks into Breatharianism, the extreme approach taken by people who claim to be able to live by air alone. Read an excerpt:

In the most alternative of alternative approaches to well-being known as Breatharianism, folks literally live on air. They don’t just breathe it; they eat it. That, anyway, is the end goal of Breatharianism, and how close one chooses to approach that ideal is a matter of, er, taste. Some believe that ideal must be approached gradually— first, perhaps, through a vegetarian diet, progressing toward liquid meals; and then, finally, the ultimate crash diet of all: air.

It should be clarified that a Breatharian actually believes the body is sustained not by air but the light that exists within it. That light provides all the energy the body needs, according to Breatharianism, although getting to the point that one can eschew the chew may be a matter of evolution. To be even more specific, Breatharianism believes prana energy replaces the need for food. Prana, they say, is a form of liquid light that permeates the air and would, for the successful Breatharian, replace the function of food.

The first question one might ask is why human beings have digestive systems if light provides all the nutrition they need? A Breatharian argues that the digestive system exists to rid the body of accumulated energy, spiritual and otherwise. That it processes food so well is simply a testament to its powers, not necessarily its real function...
