There will be plenty of racket this spring when billions of Brood X cicadas emerge after 17 years of living underground. This batch of periodical cicadas has been buried in their subterranean homes since 2004 subsisting off the sap from tree roots. The mature nymphs crawl out the earth and climb the closest vertical surface, where they cast off their exoskeletons and unfurl their wings. After recovering for a few days, countless male cicadas begin filling the air with their unmistakable mating calls.
