NASA's Sunflower-Shaped Spacecraft

article's image

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, is developing a prototype spacecraft that looks like a giant sunflower. Called a starshade, the deployable structure is designed to block light from stars so that future space telescopes can snap pictures of nearby Earth-like planets. A telescope and the starshade would launch together and once in space it would unfurl its petals and move into a position to block star glare from the space observatory. Read more about the project at NASA.gov and check out animation of the proposed starshade here.
