Reflection from an Alligator's Eye

article's image

On June 20th, I was walking along the Shark Valley Trail in the Everglades and came upon a fairly large (8-10 feet) American Alligator who had hauled himself out onto the trail for an afternoon rest. As I was watching him, a couple of other folks on the trail also stopped to check him out. I was able to approach close enough to get this close-up of his eye (with a 400mm telephoto lens). I didn't see the reflections until I was able to see the photo on a monitor. You can see three people reflected in his eye. The one on the left is just right of his vertical pupil. The one in the center is framed nicely by the reflected afternoon sky. The one on the right is me taking the picture.
