Ghosts in the Ancient World

Wednesday October 29, 2008

Expert in theology and biblical languages Mike Heiser discussed ghosts & spirits in the Bible and other ancient literature. The Old Testament occasionally writes of spirits of the deceased and differentiates them from demons. But mostly, the Bible makes prohibitions against contact with the dead (necromancy), such as with a medium. One exception is the incident involving Saul and the Witch of Endor (see below).Belief in disembodied spirits and the underworld was prevalent across many ancient cultures such as in Israel, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Assyria. Interactions between the living and their family ancestors was common place-- in Mesopotamia, the dead were thought to lead normal leaves and even pay taxes, he noted. In the Egyptian concept of the afterlife, the "akh" was a spirit or ghost that could dwell in our realm. The underworld (called Sheol by the Hebrews) had its own "cosmic geography" with both good and bad areas, such as the abyss, pit, meadows, and fields, and was ... More

Sunday June 18, 2006

Because of technical difficulties, Art Bell, broadcasting from the Philippines, was heard live for just the first hour with guest Richard C. Hoagland of Enterprise Mission, who talked about hyperdimensional changes in our solar system. Immense cyclic forces from an adjacent dimension affect the sun and its planets, he said, citing the recent activity on Jupiter with its second red spot as evidence of this. The 10/5/03 show with Hoagland and Mike Heiser was replayed for the rest of the program. ... More

Jesus, Christianity & the Da Vinci Code

Monday December 26, 2005

Dr. Mike Heiser, scholar of history and archaeology, discussed the claims of The Da Vinci Code, mysteries concerning Jesus, and Christian philosophy & viewpoints. Whether Da Vinci used a code in his artwork in paintings such as The Last Supper to express a hidden history of Jesus is somewhat irrelevant, as this was just the belief system of a man separated by 14 centuries from the event, and not "authentic Christianity," he commented. Further,Gnostic texts from which Dan Brown drew inspiration for The Da Vinci Code contain material that is opposed to traditional Christianity, he said, such as the idea that Jesus was not a redeemer. There is some evidence to indicate that Christ may have actually been born on September 11, 3 B.C., which could fit chronologically and is an interesting correlation to contemplate, said Heiser. He finds though that migration theories that Jesus traveled to places such as India to be unsubstantiated by the New Testament. Heiser also tackled the subje ... More

Intelligent Design Debate

Tuesday November 8, 2005

Three guests debated the idea of "intelligent design." Was humankind designed by God, superior alien life forms or neither?Richard C. Hoagland is the founder of Enterprise Mission, a research group that investigates the scientific possibility of ET artifacts across the solar system. The Kansas School Board has taken a brave position, he said, in their declaration that the Darwinian system isn't the only view. Hoagland finds this hopeful since it may open up schools to presenting alternative evolutionary theories, such as the idea he espouses-- directed panspermia, which posits that life was spread throughout the galaxy by an intelligent species. Mike Heiser (michaelsheiser.com) received a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and ancient Semitic Languages. He now works for Logos Bible Software, a company that specializes in analyzing ancient texts. A theist, he is not persuaded by the idea that life developed out of a vacuum, and still sees a need for some kind of intelligent caus ... More

God, Man & ET Roundtable

Thursday June 23, 2005

Four panelists joined together in a discussion on the issue of God, Man, & ETs, and shared their reactions to the possibly imminent NASA/ESA confirmation that 'We are Not Alone.'Richard C. Hoagland, the founder and principal investigator of Enterprise Mission, said that at a Mars Express conference, 75% of the scientists felt there was evidence for current life on Mars. He believes there is also evidence for past life on Mars, particularly in the humanoid "face," which has been found in the Cydonia ruins. "Ultimately," he suggested "we are the Martians," as they came to Earth and left their legacy with ancient civilizations. Further, he shared that his latest research into Iapetus, could point towards panspermia having taken place in our solar system. Hugh Ross, who directs the efforts of the Reasons to Believe institute, refuted Hoagland's stance, saying there was no scientific evidence for life outside of Earth. Referencing the Bible, he said that God, a ... More

Ancient Ghosts & the Underworld

Wednesday December 1, 2004

Mike Heiser, a scholar of ancient history and archaeology, spoke about ghosts and the underworld in the ancient texts of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Bible. There were similar concepts of the underworld across various ancient civilizations, he said, noting that it was thought of as a watery rather fiery world and that it was positioned as being underneath the Earth. The notion of hell as a place of eternal punishment began to evolve after the Old Testament, he stated, with Hades or Gehenna (possibly named after a real place that was said to have burning human sacrifices) first being mentioned in writings from before the New Testament. The story of Samuel from the Bible is one in which a ghost makes an appearance, Heiser shared. Samuel was pulled out of Sheol (the Hebrew underworld) in order to pronounce Saul's fate. In the New Testament, the entities of spirits and angels could sometimes be referring to what we think of as ghosts, Heiser detailed, citing an example related to Pete ... More

Angels & Demons

Thursday June 24, 2004

Mike Heiser, a scholar of ancient history and archaeology, discussed such topics as angels, gods, the "divine council," and monotheism. An expert in ancient Semitic languages, he said he draws his conclusions by letting the ancients "speak for themselves," in their textual materials. He noted the similarity in origin stories that run across civilizations and suggested that they "could be astronomical in their orientation." For instance, the popular combat myth of slaying the dragon, could be a reference to the Draco constellation (where the Pole Star has resided) and is tied in to cataclysmic events such as pole shifts, he explained.Heiser said he believes angels are "transdimensional" as opposed to extraterrestrial in nature, and were created by a being rather than a force. He described a divine council presided over by this being that included angels as its members. Conversely he noted that there was counter hierarchy in the demonic world that included a serpentine race of ... More

Decoding Nibiru

Monday April 14, 2003

Nibiru or Planet X is not likely to come into our solar system in May or anytime at all said Mike Heiser (michaelsheiser) an expert on ancient texts, who appeared on Monday night's show. Heiser has studied the same Sumerian texts and cuneiform that Zecharia Sitchin has based his "12th Planet" theories on and come to very different conclusions. He believes that the texts indicate that Nibiru was a star rather than a planet. "Nibiru shows up in an annual catalogue of star movements," which doesn't correlate with Sitchin's 3,600 year orbit for the planet, Heiser explained. The Sumerians referred to Nibiru as the planet or star of "crossing." To Heiser this indicates they were talking about the Polar Star, which changes over time based on the gradual wobbling or "precession" of the Earth. Heiser said the Sumerian references to the Anunnaki do not point to an extraterrestrial presence. The texts "just don't support Sitchin's reconstruction," he stated. Further, his decoding of S ...
