In the March 2009 issue of After Dark, Corinna Underwood presents an in-depth look at the curious phenomenon of doppelgangers, exploring incidents where people have seen the ghostly counterpart of a living person.

In her article, she describes how in the 1840's, at an exclusive girls' school, in what is now Latvia, one of the teachers, a 32-year old French woman named Emilie Sagee, had numerous doppelganger episodes.

In one account, Sagee was with her class, writing on the blackboard, when her exact double appeared right beside her. Her doppelganger proceeded to copy the teacher's every move as she wrote, though it was not holding any chalk. There were 13 students present at the time, all of whom witnessed the strange phenomenon. A similar occurrence was reported at dinner one evening when Sagee's double appeared standing behind her, imitating the actions of her eating, though it held no utensils.

There were also a number of other appearances during which the doppelganger did not mimic Sagee's movements. On these occasions the teacher would be seen in one part of the school when it was known that she was in another place at that exact time. Perhaps one of the most astounding accounts took place in front of the entire student body in 1946...
