Thanksgiving Special: Gratitude & Prayer

About the show

In the first half of our live Thanksgiving show, historian and occult seeker Mitch Horowitz argued that gratitude can actually unlock a special power in your mind. We live in a reciprocal world, he noted, and every time we release a thought, it contributes to the shaping of our own psychology and experiences, as well as those of others. Our thoughts gestate over time and when something is made manifest in our lives, we can usually trace it back to our initial thoughts, he pointed out. He also suggested that abstaining from gossip can lead to an enhanced and more noble existence. Gossip and rumor, he explained, "traffic in the humiliation of other people" and that has a detrimental circuit-like affect on our lives.

Horowitz encouraged people to try the "Thirty Day Mental Challenge" in which they stay away from thoughts that are negative, petty, and vindictive. Though this is difficult, and there will be innumerable periods of failure, "it doesn't matter...hold to this pledge for 30 days and see if it doesn't make some dramatic improvement to your life," he enthused, adding that one should hand write the pledge on a piece of paper at the start. Affirmations, he said, can be particularly effective when used right before falling asleep, and just after awakening-- "it's a very supple time when you can recondition your mind."

In the latter half, author James Paris discussed ways to use prayer for a financial and personal recovery or breakthrough. He recommended setting aside an hour or more to unplug, and quiet one's mind in order to listen to God. "Prayer often works," he stated, "when you say it's not my plan, but God's plan." While a person can detail what they would like in their life, they should understand that God knows better than they do what is best for them, and accept whatever direction is offered, Paris suggested.

God can use other people to help someone, he continued. Beyond family, it can be a blessing for friends to help, as they can be uplifted by charitable actions, and genuinely want to offer assistance, he cited. Paris also talked about his interest in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. We will probably see a widespread "securitization" of Bitcoin where hedge funds and mutual funds will start trading with the currency, he remarked, adding that it could be a smart investment to buy small amounts of other cryptocurrencies that one day could break out in value like Bitcoin.
