ST. PETERSBURG -- One teenager has died and another is in critical condition after their stolen Maserati flipped and crashed on 62nd Avenue North in St. Petersburg early Sunday morning.
Pinellas deputies responded to a reported car burglary around 3:20 a.m. on 58th Avenue North just a few blocks east of U.S. 19. A helicopter tracked the teens and watched them approach a 2016 silver Maserati (pictured). They say it was unlocked with keys inside. According to the sheriff, 15-year-old Keondrick Lang opened the door with his T-shirt. He climbed in along with 16-year-old Malachi Daniels and 15-year-old Mario Bonilla, and they drove east on 62nd with headlights off.
As deputies tried to stop them on the ground, the sheriff's office says they accelerated to over 80 miles per hour. The car hit the sign of a business and flipped. Deputies were not pursuing.
Bonilla died at the scene and Lang was in critical injuries. Daniels went to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
