According to a new proposal based on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data, lunar pits (like the one seen here) may be the ideal location for future human colonies on the moon. The massive craters, which have been discovered by the hundreds on the lunar surface, would provide protection from radiation, temperature changes, and other hazards posed to the first moon denizens.
