An Egyptologist and cryptologist, Jean-Guillaume Olette-Pelletier, recently discovered previously unseen messages hidden within the hieroglyphs on a 3,300-year-old obelisk that has stood in Paris' Place de la Concorde since 1830. Using temporary scaffolding to access the monument's upper sections, he identified "crypto-hieroglyphs," a form of writing once readable only by Egypt's elite. The messages, which are visible only from specific angles, praise the power, victories, and longevity of Pharaoh Ramses II and are considered a form of ancient propaganda. It remains unknown if more hidden messages exist on the monument.
