This week's new programs explore the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), beginning with an episode from March 13th, 2002 in which Art spoke with senior astronomer at the SETI Institute Seth Shostak about the organization's work looking for possible alien signals in space. He discussed the enormous challenge of finding something significant in the vastness of space, responded to legendary UFO researcher Stanton Friedman's critique of SETI, and talked about the potential of the massive Allen Telescope Array, which was under construction at the time and became fully operational in 2007.
Our second episode this week journeys back to 3/3/1999 and features a conversation that Art had with Dr. H. Paul Shuch from the SETI League. He explained how the search for extraterrestrial intelligence had initially been conducted by NASA, but was eventually canceled. While the SETI Institute was subsequently created to continue a targeted search for alien signals, Shuch opted to form the SETI League, which focused more on a broader survey of space using amateur researchers often utilizing backyard satellite TV dishes converted into radio telescopes.
These classic programs have commercials and breaks removed and are presented in multiple-platforms-- available on-demand for Mac, Windows, IOS, and Android. Many of them feature rare "5th" hours of content from back in the 90s when the show had a longer running time. We do include Art's beloved bumper music, which became such an indelible part of his program.
