Astronomers Detect Massive Gamma-Ray Burst

On Sunday, October 9, a massive gamma-ray burst ranking among the brightest ever seen was detected by several space probes, including NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and Wind spacecraft. Known as GRB 221009A, the enormous explosion originated from the direction of the constellation Sagitta and took approximately 1.9 billion years to reach Earth. Astronomers speculate the colossal burst was caused by the birth of a black hole within the heart of a gigantic collapsing star.
