One man's quest to catalog Loch Ness Monster sightings has turned into a multiple decade mission which shows no sign of slowing down.
Gary Campbell created the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register back in May of 1996, making this month the 20th anniversary of the organization.
According to Campbell, he has recorded over 1,000 incidents where people believe they have seen the creature said to lurk in Loch Ness.
The tireless documentarian may be the best man for the task, since he doubles as an accountant for his day job.
Carefully removing cases that have been proven to be hoaxes or misidentifications, Campbell keeps a high threshold for inclusion in the register and actually passes on the majority of reported sightings.
And, contrary to how some skeptics may depict the endeavor, Campbell is not a 'true believer' in the concept of Nessie as a prehistoric beast trapped in the loch.
His theory is that the creature is either an eel or some kind of fish, which has become the prevalent theory from Nessie hunters in recent years.
With camera-equipped smartphones becoming increasingly prevalent, it's likely that Campbell will have no shortage of reports as the register continues into its third decade.
Reflecting on the passage of two decades since he began the register and what the future may hold, Campbell provided a somewhat melancholy perspective on it all.
"When I started the register, I never expected to be doing it this long but after 20 years nobody has still solved it - so I expect I will be doing this to the day I die," he told the Scotsman.
In light of his two decades of determined cataloging, we sincerely hope that Campbell gets an answer in his lifetime and can finally close the book on Nessie once and for all.
