'Fireball' Over Tasmania Spawns Firestorm Online

Video of an anomalous object in the sky over Tasmania that was posted online earlier this week had some suspecting that the oddity was a UFO.

The remarkable footage, filmed by a woman named Lee-Anne Peters, shows a fiery-looking object streaking through the air standing out amidst a gorgeous view of the sunset.

After Peters shared the video on Facebook, numerous viewers offered their take on what she had filmed with suggestions ranging from the mundane like a meteor to the fantastic possibility that it was a proverbial flying saucer.

Unfortunately, as is often the case on social media, it didn't take long for heated arguments to erupt as passionate UFO enthusiasts insisted that the video was proof of an extraterrestrial presence.

According to one astronomer, they may be correct in saying that it was a craft, but its origins appear to be a lot closer to home.

Chris Arkle suggests that the 'UFO' was actually just a jet that appeared to be wondrous due to its exhaust being backlit by the sun.

He went on to explain that the duration of the event and speed of the object indicate that it was neither a meteor nor space junk falling to Earth.

While one is inclined to trust the word of a scientist who would know such things, it's still somewhat of a stretch to see an airplane when watching the video, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that it may have really been aliens visiting Australia.
