Last weekend the Italian Coast Guard found the carcass of an enormous finback whale near the port of Sorrento. The whale measured 65 feet long and has been estimated to weigh more than 77 tons, making it "one of the largest" ever discovered in the Mediterranean. Coast Guard divers stumbled onto the giant animal after seeing its young calf swim into the harbor then back to the whale's corpse. Researchers are investigating what may have killed the large finback.
