Hawaii's New Island Has a Brief Life

Formed by the lava flow from the volcano on Hawaii's Big Island, a small land structure was born just off the nearby coast (pictured above). The USGS reported its existence on Friday, yet it's status as an island was short lived. By Monday, July 16th, the body of lava was reconnected to the main flow on land, and it's now considered an "isthmus" rather than an island. More at Atlas Obscura.
