Image: 10,000-Mile Wide Sunspot

The Inouye Solar Telescope in Maui, Hawaii, has released its first ever image of a sunspot. Taken on January 28, 2020, the image reveals in remarkable detail the surface structure of a sunspot. Magnetic fields in the sunspot prevent heat from reaching the surface of the Sun giving the region its characteristic darker color. The sunspot measures approximately 10,000 miles across — large enough to fit the entire Earth — with a temperature of more than 7,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists will utilize the telescope's advanced optics and a four-meter primary mirror to get the best possible view of the Sun from Earth during the next solar cycle.
