Is Saddam Underground?

One country that has created an elaborate underground labyrinth of bunkers, residences and tunnels is Iraq, and it's possible that Saddam Hussein is currently hiding out in a subterranean location there.

The recent special Saddam's Secret Tunnels(1) on the History Channel, explored some of these mysterious underground locations that it's believed Saddam began building back in the 1980's, using equipment and materials from countries around the world. He ordered the construction of an intricate network, "with miles of interconnected tunnels with camouflaged entry points, and escape routes to Syria," Newsweek's Christopher Dickey commented.

Saddam is said to have been inspired by the Yugoslavian dictator Tito's impenetrable bunker system. In fact, his underground "Project 2000," built across from the Presidential Palace, was hit by 5,000 lb. precision bombs during the recent conflict, and though, the US military says the state of the bunker is "classified," it is believed it is largely undamaged. Because many of the underground facilities in Iraq are equipped with efficient water and air filtration systems, as well as food supplies, it's possible Saddam could live down in one of them, or move between such locations, for months on end.
