James Webb Space Telescope Unfolds Giant Gold Mirror

On Saturday, the James Webb Space Telescope completed the final stage of deploying its enormous gold-coated mirror. The two wings of the observatory's main mirror had previously been folded to fit within the nose cone of an Ariane 5 rocket. The last part of the primary mirror, the largest ever put into space, finished unfolding at 1:17 p.m. EST. The ground team will next commence the months-long process of moving the 18 mirror segments into alignment to prepare for science operations this summer.
