Scientists have discovered a vast prehistoric landscape hidden a mile beneath the East Antarctic ice in a region known as Wilkes Land. Led by Professor Stewart Jamieson of Durham University, the team used satellite data and ice-penetrating radar to uncover a 12,000-square-mile area of deep valleys and high ridges, evidence of ancient forests, rivers, and ecosystems that existed over 34 million years ago. Described as a "time capsule," this lost world offers a rare glimpse into Earth's distant past and may hold valuable clues about the evolution of Antarctica's ice sheet. Future drilling efforts aim to retrieve samples for deeper analysis.
