After two years of wrangling over its $1.3 billion dollar cost, construction on the world's largest telescope has been allowed to commence. Conceived by the European Southern Observatory organization, a coalition of 15 nations working together to study astronomy, the monstrous telescope will be built in Chile's Atacama Desert. Known simply as the European Extremely Large Telescope, the E-ELT is expected to be fully operational in 2024 and will boast the ability to capture images 15 times sharper than the vaunted Hubble Telescope.
