NASA Unveils Breathtaking Earthrise Image

Courtesy of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter comes this stunning new image of Earth as seen from the moon.

The vivid depiction of our home planet required elaborate maneuvering from the LRO in order to capture the entire scene.

While this image and similar depictions of the planet are often called an 'Earthrise,' NASA explained that the perspective from the moon is quite different than one might expect.

"Viewed from the lunar surface, the Earth never rises or sets. Since the moon is tidally locked, Earth is always in the same spot above the horizon," principal investigator Mark Robinson said in a NASA press release unveiling the image.

Eventual lunar denizens will, however, be treated to an entirely different showcase of our planet.

Robinson explained "future astronauts will see the continents rotate in and out of view and the ever-changing pattern of clouds will always catch one's eye"

So while the idea of an Earthrise may be a misnomer, the view from the moon should still be fantastic for anyone lucky enough to make the trip.
