New Documents Detail New Jersey's Drone Scare

Newly released documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act reveal that the mysterious drone sightings reported across New Jersey in late 2024 were taken seriously by law enforcement. These incidents involved numerous sightings near sensitive locations. Police reports describe large drones flying in coordinated formations. Sometimes, more than a dozen appeared at a time over reservoirs, power substations, research laboratories, hospitals, and military facilities. Officers noted that some drones appeared significantly larger than consumer models. Some had triangular or fixed-wing designs and capabilities suggesting military-grade technology. In one case, drones forced a New Jersey State Police medevac helicopter to abort a landing. The drones reportedly followed the helicopter to another location. Meanwhile, air traffic controllers tracked unidentified aircraft moving through restricted airspace near Trenton-Mercer Airport at speeds approaching 170 miles per hour.

Emails and internal memos show that local police, the New Jersey State Police, and federal agencies, including the FBI, coordinated responses as sightings increased. Authorities warned that the drones could potentially carry explosives or represent foreign surveillance activity. These warnings grew stronger after sightings near communications towers and critical infrastructure. While many reports were eventually attributed to misidentified aircraft or celestial objects, officers continued documenting unusual drone activity they could not explain. The Trump administration later stated the drones were FAA-approved for research purposes. However, officials offered few details, leaving lingering uncertainty about the true nature and operators behind the so-called "Jersey drone scare."
