Parents Discover Adopted 'Child' is 37-year-old Woman

Authorities in Brazil have arrested a 37-year-old woman who successfully infiltrated a family's life by posing as a 12-year-old girl. The suspect, identified as Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, reportedly initiated her scam by approaching a church in Joinville, Santa Catarina, under the alias "Gabriele." She claimed to be a runaway child fleeing a life of horrific abuse in the state of Pará. Her performance was so convincing that members of the congregation provided her with financial aid and shelter before introducing her to a local couple eager to provide a home for a child in need. She then lived with the couple for about 14 months.

Once integrated into the family, Oliveira went to extreme lengths to maintain her persona. She allegedly adopted childlike mannerisms, including speaking in a high-pitched voice and sleeping with a comfort blanket. To explain her mature physical appearance, she fabricated a backstory involving forced hormone treatments. The family, entirely blinded by empathy, showered her with affection, even throwing a 12th birthday party and financing her medical needs, such as weight-loss medication, under the belief they were helping a traumatized minor.

The scheme finally unraveled when suspicious relatives looked into her background and alerted the police. Investigators later discovered that Oliveira is a repeat offender, with links to similar fraud schemes across at least seven Brazilian states. She is currently in custody, where a judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation.
