Photo: Hubble Snaps Meathook Galaxy

NASA's Image of the Day features an image taken from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope of the eye-catching galaxy NGC 2442, also known as the Meathook Galaxy because of its asymmetrical shape. In March 2015, astronomers observed a supernova explosion (SN 2015F) in the galaxy caused by a white dwarf star draining too much mass from its companion. The imbalance triggered a chain reaction nuclear fusion event that led to the supernova explosion.
