The sun unleashed a powerful flare aimed at Earth on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, causing communication disturbances. The X-class solar flare originated from a sunspot known as Active Region 12297. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the flare as it erupted (see below). More at Space.com.
