Radishes, Witches, and Kidnapped Parents: Lesser-Known Christmas Traditions Around the World

With so many ways to experience the Christmas spirit, you may think you've heard all about the different traditions and stories that come with the season. You might be surprised to learn of these lesser-known Christmas figures and customs, however. In several countries, for example, there's the Befana, an old witch-like woman who reportedly crossed paths with the Magi on their way to visit the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. In parts of Mexico, radishes are carved to depict Christmas themes, with prizes given to the best renditions. And in many Serbian homes, children bind their parents in a mock kidnapping, demanding gifts in exchange for their freedom from the Christmas kidnappers.
