Scottish Musician is Maestro of Ancient Rock Art

By discovering hundreds of ancient stone carvings found throughout his home country, a musician in Scotland has found unlikely stardom in a different 'genre' of rock.

Formerly of the band Darts, George Currie now works as a music teacher and moonlights as an amateur archaeologist in search of undiscovered rock carvings created by Scottish highlanders thousands of years ago.

His hobby began at the turn of the century when he spotted a site which had never before been found by researchers.

Intrigued by the possibility that there were others out there in the wilderness of Scotland, Currie went looking for more and, over the years, managed to find an incredible array of such carvings.

In fact, the guitarist alone has discovered an astounding 670 previously-unknown rock carvings, constituting more than a quarter of the 2,500 known sites in Scotland!

The purpose of the unique impressions, which can be seen in the video above, are a mystery to researchers, who have suggested they could star maps, used to mark territory, or some kind of yet-to-be-deciphered symbols.

A new research project aims to learn more about the rock carvings by creating 3D renderings of the sites for future studies.

Based on Currie's prodigious ability to spot the sites, it's likely to be quite a while before the project is complete.
