'Starshades' May Shed New Light on Exoplanets

One of the more difficult aspects in the study of exoplanets has been observing them amidst all of the light emitted from their parent stars. As such, NASA scientists have proposed a unique solution to this challenge in the form of a flower-shaped 'starshade' which would work in tandem with telescopes and allow for far greater visibility of these enigmatic worlds. While researchers are hopeful that the concept will prove to be a powerful tool in the future, they concede that testing the idea here on Earth has proven to be difficult in light of the complex logistics involved with such a device.
