An odd cell phone video from China seems to show some kind of mysterious creature briefly emerge from a lake to the astonishment of onlookers.
The footage, filmed at a lake in China's Louping County, features a dark object causing ripples on the surface of the water.
When what looks to be another part of the anomaly suddenly pops up out of the lake, witnesses can be heard gasping and shouting at the strange sight.
After word of the lake monster spread throughout the local community, villagers have begun flocking to the site in the hopes of spotting the beast for a second time.
As to what it may have been, the prevalent theory is that it may have been an alligator, although such animals are not found in that region of China.
For their part, government officials have offered a rather prosaic explanation that sounds almost as hard to believe as the 'lake monster' theory with the suggestion that the 'creature' is simply sacks floating in the water.
