March 13th marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic cases in UFO history: the Phoenix Lights incident.
That evening, hundreds if not thousands of people living around the city of Phoenix reported spotting an inexplicable formation of lights hovering in the sky.
Some witnesses claimed that they could see that the lights were part of a distinct triangular craft that blocked out the stars as it moved through the sky.
The considerable number of witnesses and documentation of the event spawned enormous media attention, especially since the incident took place at the height of the X-Files' popularity when UFOs were suddenly 'hot' with the public.
Attempts by the military to dismiss the lights as merely flares only increased the intrigue surrounding the mass sighting as witnesses insisted that was not what they saw that night.
The furor grew to such a fever pitch that Arizona governor Fife Symington held a press conference where he unveiled a person wearing an alien costume as the source for the Phoenix Lights.
Ironically, on the 10th anniversary of the event, Symington expressed regret for the display and revealed that he had also seen the lights back in 1997.
In the ensuing years since the initial incident, the Phoenix Lights have yet to be adequately explained, despite the best efforts of skeptics and UFO researchers alike.
As such, the case has come to be recognized as one of the most prominent UFO events in the latter half of the 20th century and certainly in this modern era.
