The Satanic Church Sues Netflix Over Statue

The Satanic Church (TST) says they are angry over what they see as a co-opting of one of their images by the popular TV program The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and are slapping it with a $150 million lawsuit. A cursory glance does reveal some close similarities.

The suit alleges that the creators of the Sabrina The Teenage Witch reboot on Netflix copied one of their holy images of Satan (aka Baphomet) for use in the program and claim the defendants “prominently feature, benefit from and defame TST’s unique original expression (the “TST Baphomet with Children”) of the historic Baphomet, an androgynous goat-headed deity.” The suit was filed on Thursday with the U.S. District Court for Southern New York.

The Church is, of course, no stranger to controversy. Last month, they wheeled the 1-ton bronze statue in question onto the grounds of the Arkansas State Capitol to protest the presence of a “Ten Commandments” monument that was installed in 2015, with the approval of the state legislature.

The group was itself parodied by actor Andrew Bowser in a clip from 2015 during a Detroit unveiling of the well-traveled statue.
