Video: 'Faceless' Fish Snagged by Deep Sea Research Expedition

A research expedition studying deep sea marine life off the coast of Australia recovered a bizarre 'faceless' fish that hasn't been seen in over a century.

The rather odd-looking creature was snagged using a small net from two-and-a-half miles deep in the water at an area near Sydney.

Marine biologists say that the fish's unique appearance comes from the fact that its mouth can be found on the bottom of the creature and its eyes that are almost imperceptible.

Expedition leader Dr. Tim O’Hara marveled to The Guardian that "it looks like two rear-ends on a fish, really."

Perhaps even more remarkable than the fish's 'faceless' nature is that this is the first time that the creature has been pulled from the waters off of Australia since 1873.

Additionally, O'Hara marveled, the weird creature is the proverbial tip of the iceberg as far as rare finds from the expedition.

"About a third of all specimens coming on board are new totally new to science," he told the newspaper.

However, O'Hara conceded, the other finds are not quite as jaw-dropping as this particular creature, making it rather ironic that the fish would become the proverbial 'face' of the groundbreaking project.
