Video: Monkey Head Transplant

In the 1970s, neurosurgeon Dr. Robert J. White performed a controversial operation to transplant the head of one monkey onto another monkey's body. In a video on Motherboard's YouTube channel, Dr. White explains his groundbreaking surgery, what he calls a total body transplant, and how it resulted in a monkey that was paralyzed (due to spinal cord separation) but could see, hear, taste, and smell. According to Dr. White, this kind of research could be used to transfer the head of a human quadriplegic patient, such as Stephen Hawking, to the body of a brain-dead donor with a healthy body.
