Video: 'Phantom Twist' – the Ghostly Drone

Engineers at Northwestern University have created an unusual drone called Phantom Twist that hides in plain sight, not with camouflage, but by spinning so fast it becomes little more than a blur. Rotating up to 25 times per second, the single-propeller drone appears as a ghostly haze that's far harder for the human eye to detect than a conventional quadcopter.

Led by Michael Rubenstein and unveiled at the Robotics: Science and Systems 2026 conference in Sydney, the project used AI to sift through 20,000 design possibilities before settling on the most stable, low-visibility configuration.

The technology could prove useful for wildlife observation, environmental surveys, and infrastructure inspections where a less conspicuous drone is an advantage. It's not completely invisible, however. The propeller is still audible, and parts of the frame remain visible. Future versions may incorporate quieter motors and more transparent materials.

While other spinning drone concepts have been tried before, Phantom Twist is the most successful yet, reportedly making the craft about ten times harder to spot than a standard drone. Though true invisibility remains out of reach for now, the design offers a clever new approach to stealth, while inevitably raising fresh questions about privacy and surveillance.
