While Americans are celebrating their 247th birthday today, yesterday, in the Florida Keys, the region rang in their 200th birthday with a massive key lime pie more than 13 feet in diameter. The enormous dessert was prepared by local chefs and featured a graham cracker crust, 100 gallons of sweetened condensed milk, and the juice from several thousand Key limes.
According to state lore, Key lime pie was invented in the 1890s by a woman known as 'Aunt Sally' at Key West's Curry Mansion. Organizers of Monday's event plan to certify their bicentennial Key lime pie as a world record, though it was promptly served to the celebrants in attendance.
