Watch: NASA Tests 3D-Printed Rocket Engine

NASA successfully hot fired a full-scale rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) for nearly 10 minutes. The new rocket engine uses "a supersonic combustion phenomenon known as a detonation" to generate thrust, and can create more power while burning less fuel than traditional propulsion systems. The hardware that makes up the new engine design was 3D printed, and showed it could operate for extended time under extreme conditions caused by the detonations. Scientists think the new fuel-efficient rocket technology will allow future space flight vehicles to visit deep space destinations like Mars.
